Annual Tree Lighting in Kaimuki
by Michael Choe | Dec. 11, 2022
I’ve been to Puu O Kaimuki Mini Park just a few times to enjoy the scenic cityscape at night. But I’ve never seen the holiday tree up close when it was lit until recently. Hawaiian Electric volunteers visit the park annually during the holidays to string up colorful lights on the giant tree-shaped frame located in the center of the field. This year, I had the privilege of being present for the lighting ceremony.
On Saturday, Nov. 26, I helped livestream the lighting event on social media. Despite being promoted as a virtual event, some spectators came by. I guess the residents living in the area wanted to enjoy the lights in person. At about 5 p.m., local musicians Clare Nelson and Johnny Tanner performed some familiar holiday tunes as we waited for the sunset. The lights weren’t on yet, but the park already seemed bright and colorful. Families and friends were chatting, at least a dozen dogs were playfully bouncing around, and the sunset wrapped everything in a warm, sepia blanket.
The sun went down at about 5:50 p.m. and after a quick countdown, the tree was lit! As Clare and Johnny sang a few more songs, some bystanders moved closer to take photos of the tree and we received some comments on our livestream. It was nice to see firsthand the positive impact that this annual project has on the community.
If you’ve never been to Puu O Kaimuki Mini Park during the holidays, I highly recommend it — the tree makes all the difference. The park is easily accessible, has a spectacular view and makes for a great photo. Just remember to follow the park rules and only visit during official park hours. Mahalo to Keep It Kaimuki, IBEW Local 1260, our linemen and all others who helped decorate the tree and brighten up the holidays!
