Join our Hawaiian Electric ‘ohana

When my son was born nine years ago, I set my sights to moving back to Maui, and after being hired by Hawaiian Electric on the Valley Isle I’ve never looked back. I’m thankful for being able to live, play, and work on this island I call home.
Little did I realize at the time — I was also gaining an extended work ‘ohana stretching across the five islands we serve. It may sound cliché but being part of our Hawaiian Electric team is really like being part of a big family.
It’s what I tell people when they’re looking for a different opportunity or to the friend who is thinking of returning to Hawaii — check out the jobs at our company!
If you like to work outdoors or prefer working at a desk — we got it. If you want to play a critical role in our state’s energy transformation in the face of global warming — look no further.
The same can be said for many of my fellow employees who also encourage others to check out the career opportunities Hawaiian Electric offers.
“I definitely enjoy being home and working here in Hawaii,” said Keiden Pastrana, an operator helper who grew up on Molokai.
Currently, the company is hiring for an additional operator helper like Keiden who helps with daily maintenance and operations at the Kahului Power Plant.
“I like that my day is never the same,” Keiden said. “I work with different machinery and because I’m not on a set crew, I get to work with everyone in the plant throughout the week.”
In search of a hands-on job, Keiden set up an account on our online Hawaiian Electric Careers site and checked out the available positions. If you take a look at the site today, an array of job openings await for engineers, customer planners, electricians and project analysts to name a few.
While applicants may initially be daunted by the aptitude and skill tests some positions call for, Keiden insists, “Just apply, it doesn’t hurt to apply and there are online practice tests to help you prepare.”
Many of the jobs offer a built-in line of progression or advancement in the company and provide a competitive compensation package as well as on-the-job training.
Plus, Keiden noted personal satisfaction comes with the job, too. “When you see the full picture of what our company is doing, I like the fact I help contribute and provide for our islands.”
