Lineman’s Rodeo puts a spotlight on safety
Nov. 7, 2017
We are committed to a culture of safety, and that’s the overarching message of the 2017 International Lineman’s Rodeo held earlier this month in Bonner Springs, Kansas where our own demonstrated their knowledge and skills alongside some of the best lineman in the world.
“The lineman rodeo is all about safety and training because getting our lineman home safely each and every night is our mission,” said Felix Asinsin, a supervisor in Construction & Maintenance who organized the company’s participation. As climate change impacts create greater demand on utility crews working to restore power in the aftermath of a super storm, safety is a paramount concern across the industry and why many companies participate in the lineman rodeo and conference to learn and share best safety practices.
“The 34th annual International Lineman’s Rodeo was a record breaking event that brought together over 3,500 attendees and hosted the largest number of competitors to date with 238 teams and 313 apprentices that competed for top honors,” said Dale Warman, Co-Chair, Board of Directors-International Lineman Rodeo Association. The competitions are based on traditional lineman tasks, such as a hurt man rescue pole climb where a lineman has to climb to the top of a pole to safely retrieve a dummy.
Warman added, “This event brought together the best of the best! It’s truly amazing to see all the participation and how it all comes together from the organization to the utility companies that send their employees to the families that travel miles and miles to support them. This event was started 34 years ago by linemen, for the linemen and will continue to be all about the linemen.”
