When it comes to the new year, people are all about making resolutions. Maybe you’re considering a diet or new exercise routine. My New Year’s resolution is to save energy and keep my electric bill under $100 every month even during summer. The beauty of setting an energy-saving resolution is that it’s achievable, requires little effort and the month-end savings confirm what you’re doing is working. I’ve included some energy-saving tips below to make sure you achieve your energy-saving resolution by the end of the year.

Water Heater

Water heaters use a lot of energy because we heat water for cleaning and cooking. Most manufacturers set it at 140 degrees Fahrenheit; however, you can change it to 120 degrees. The lower temperature doesn’t feel that different and will cut energy consumption, as well as reduce mineral buildup and corrosion in the unit. Water heaters should be replaced every 10 years so if you’re looking to install a new, solar-powered one in your home then please check out these available rebates from Hawaii Energy to help offset the cost.

Air Conditioner

A new year means the summer months will soon follow so get those air conditioners ready. One way to keep your air conditioning running efficient is to clean out the filters. Dusty filters tend to cause the AC to work harder. You can also set the air conditioner temperature to 73 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. It’ll be low enough to keep you cool and comfortable without using extra energy. If you’re looking to upgrade or add an AC to your home, make sure you select an ENERGY STAR®-approved unit, which also have rebate offers too.

Refrigerator

Speaking of ENERGY STAR® appliances, your refrigerator unit should have that logo, too! Those models are 10–30% more energy efficient than regular models. If you’re aiming to get a new, energy-efficient refrigerator, you can recycle your old one through Hawaii Energy’s Rid-a-Fridge program. Hawaii Energy will even pay you $75 for your old fridge! Make sure to optimize your refrigerator and freezer space by keeping it 75% full. Your food stays cold and safe in the refrigerator at temps between 35 degrees and 38 degrees Fahrenheit so don’t lower the temperature any more or you’ll waste energy.

LED Lighting

The new year is the perfect time to retrofit your home with LED (Light-emitting diode) lighting. LEDs use at least 75% less energy and last up to 50 times longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs. LEDs also emit a light that is much cooler, which is perfect for the warm summer months. Remember to turn off the lights when you leave the room for extra savings.

It’s as simple as changing a setting or your habits to start saving energy throughout the year. The new year is also a great time to upgrade your home with energy-efficient appliances. Consider it a fresh start for your home. Don’t be afraid to ring in the new year with some wonderful energy savings! It’s so much easier than sticking to a diet.
